Rome taxi fares 2026: the official schedule, explained
What a taxi costs in Rome is set by the city council in a resolution, and it is the same for every cooperative and every app. This page turns the schedule in force into concrete numbers: where the meter starts, what a kilometre costs, what happens when the car is stuck in traffic, and which rides have a flat fare.

Watch out for out-of-date prices. Plenty of websites still quote €50 for Fiumicino, €31 for Ciampino or a €3 flag fall. Those figures are gone: today they are €55, €40 and €3.50. Everything below is the schedule currently in force.

The flag fall is the amount showing on the meter as you get in — or, if you ordered the car, the highest amount you can find on it when you get in, plus €5. From there the meter climbs in 10 cent steps.
Distance: the three bands T1, T2 and T3
The meter counts kilometres whenever the car is doing more than 20 km/h, in three rising bands:

Moving from T1 to T2 and T3 is automatic and depends on the amount on the meter, not on the district: there is no "out of town" rate in Rome. The band in use is shown on the meter display.
Time: €32.58 an hour in traffic
When the car drops below 20 km/h — queues, traffic lights, a wait you asked for — the meter stops counting distance and starts counting time: €32.58 an hour, about €0.54 a minute. That is why the same ride costs more at 6pm than at 2pm.
Minimum fare
No ride can cost less than €9, even if it is two blocks: at the destination the meter switches to "cassa" and shows €9. From the airports the minimum is higher — €25 from Ciampino and €35 from Fiumicino — for destinations without a flat fare. Extras are added on top of the ordinary minimum fare, while the airport minimums already include them.

These are estimates worked out from the schedule, not guaranteed prices: the meter switches between distance and time depending on real traffic. As a reference point, the city council puts the "standard ride" of 5 km with a 5 minute wait on a weekday at €13.10.

Discounts written into the schedule
- 10% off the metered fare on rides to public hospitals in Rome.
- 10% for young people leaving nightclubs on Friday and Saturday, where the venue has an agreement with a cooperative.
- 15% for women travelling alone at night, between 10pm and 6am.
- 10% for over-70s and for disabled badge holders: written into the resolution, waiting for the act that brings it into force.
Discounts cannot be combined, and they do not apply to minimum fares, flat fares, or rides to and from airports and ports.
Flat fares for airports, stations and the port
On these routes the meter stays off: the price is per car, covers luggage, extras (apart from the fifth passenger) and tolls, and applies to the direct route with no stops. If you order a taxi in Rome for a flat-fare route, the driver waits up to 10 minutes from the time you gave; after that the meter takes over.

Between the ring road and Fiumicino, on routes without a flat fare, the price cannot exceed €80 including extras. Paying, receipts and disputes
The driver has to accept cards and debit cards and has to give you a receipt; the fare schedule must be on display inside the car. If the price does not add up, ask for the receipt with the licence number on it and file a report with the city council: the procedure is on the scams and passenger rights page.

How much is a 20 km taxi ride in Rome?
About €39 on a weekday with ten minutes or so stuck in traffic, and €43 at night. The meter charges €1.33 per km for roughly the first 5 km, €1.45 up to €25 above the flag fall and €1.73 after that, plus the time spent below 20 km/h.
How much is a 10 km taxi ride in Rome?
About €21.70 on weekdays and €25.70 at night, with normal traffic. Standing still is what pushes the price up: every minute below 20 km/h costs €0.54.
Do taxis in Rome cost more at night?
Only the flag fall changes: €7.50 between 10pm and 6am instead of €3.50 (€5 on Saturdays and public holidays). Distance and time cost the same. Women travelling alone at night get 15% off the metered fare.
Is there a call-out charge?
There is no fixed fee. When you get in, the meter cannot show more than the flag fall plus €5. If you are the one running late, that cap no longer applies.
Is luggage charged for?
The first bag is free. From the second onwards, €1 each if it is larger than 35×25×50 cm. On the airport and port flat fares, luggage is already included.
