Every item in the sum is explained on the 2026 taxi fares page. A short hop still costs the €9 minimum fare, and standing in traffic is charged at €32.58 an hour. Frequently asked questions
How accurate is the estimate?
It uses the city council schedule exactly as written: flag fall, T1/T2/T3, hourly rate, minimum fare and extras. Traffic is the unknown: the meter charges for time whenever the car drops below 20 km/h, so the same ride can cost 10 to 20% more at 6pm than at 2pm. That is why the answer is a range.
How do I find out the distance?
Open Google Maps or Apple Maps, set the route by car and read the distance. For a rough idea: Termini to the Colosseum 2 km, Termini to the Vatican 5 km, Termini to EUR 10 km, the centre to Fiumicino 30 km (though that route has a flat fare).
Why does the calculator always say €55 for Fiumicino?
Because that route has a set price: the meter stays off and the fare is €55 per car whatever the hour or the traffic. It applies to addresses inside the Aurelian Walls; for anywhere else the meter comes back, with a €35 minimum and an €80 cap from inside the ring road.
Does the estimate hold for Uber and Free Now?
Yes: those apps call licensed Roman taxis, which charge the same schedule. The only difference is the call-out, capped at €5, which the calculator adds when you tick "taxi ordered by phone or app".
