For anything that matters — a flight, a ship, a hospital appointment — a phone call to a cooperative is still the most reliable route: you speak to an operator, you get the call sign of the car, and you can ring the same switchboard back if plans change. Apps book well within the city, but confirmation depends on how many drivers are working at that hour.
What to say when you book
Date, time and the full address
Street and house number, the staircase or doorbell if it matters, a visible landmark. For a hotel the name is enough; for a station say which entrance (at Termini: via Marsala or piazza dei Cinquecento).
Destination, and the time of the flight or train
That way the operator can suggest how early to leave: Fiumicino from the centre takes 40 to 50 minutes, longer at rush hour. If the route has a set price they will confirm it on the spot (€55 to Fiumicino, €40 to Ciampino from the centre).
People, luggage, anything unusual
More than four passengers, bulky bags, a child seat, a wheelchair, an animal: say so when you book, so the right car is sent.
A phone number that works
The driver or the switchboard will ring if they cannot find you. Early in the morning, keep the phone on and watch for a text with the call sign and the arrival time.
The rules worth knowing
- No booking fee. As you get in, the meter cannot exceed the flag fall plus €5; on flat fares nothing is added at all.
- 10 minutes of waiting on flat-fare rides. If you booked a flat-fare ride starting in Rome, the driver waits up to 10 minutes from the time you gave; after that the meter takes over.
- Waiting is charged by time on every other ride. Standing still costs €32.58 an hour, about €0.54 a minute. If you are late, tell the switchboard: it stops the car being reassigned.
- The price is still the meter. Booking changes no tariff, with apps or with cooperatives. Estimate it with the fare calculator, or from your own address with the quote from your location.
Typical cases
- A 6 or 7am flight from Fiumicino: book the evening before for 4.30 or 5am with a cooperative and confirm the call sign; the price is €55 flat from the centre. At 5am there is no train yet, but there are taxis.
- A ship from Civitavecchia: €150 flat from the centre, €130 from Fiumicino; book at least a day ahead and ask for a big car if there is a lot of luggage.
- A hospital appointment: book for the time of the appointment; rides to public hospitals carry 10% off the metered fare. Ask for an adapted vehicle if one is needed.
- A wedding, a dinner, an evening event: book the return leg as well, with a rough time and a phone number: the switchboard keeps it in the diary and rings when the car is close.
- A group of five to eight: ask for a 6 or 7 seat car, or two taxis, and remember the €5 for every passenger beyond the fourth.
Frequently asked questions
Can a taxi be booked in Rome for the following day?
Yes. The cooperatives take bookings with a date and a time: call 06 3570, 06 6645 or 06 5551, or send a WhatsApp message. Free Now (up to 4 days ahead) and the Chiama Taxi 060609 app also take bookings. Confirmation comes by voice or by text, with the call sign of the car.
Does booking cost anything?
No, there is no booking fee. The call-out rule applies: as you get in, the meter cannot show more than the flag fall plus €5. On flat-fare routes — airports, the port — the price stays the flat one, with nothing added.
How long does a booked taxi wait if I am late?
On flat-fare rides starting in Rome the driver waits up to 10 minutes from the time you gave; after that the meter takes over. On ordinary rides waiting is charged by time (€32.58 an hour) and after a few minutes the switchboard may reassign the car: if you are running late, tell them.
Can I book a large taxi for five or six people?
Yes, if you ask for it: the cooperatives run people carriers with 6 or 7 seats. From the fifth passenger onwards €5 a head is added, flat fares included.
How do I cancel a booking?
Call the same switchboard back, or cancel in the app, as early as you can. There is no penalty, but a car sent out for nothing is a lost fare for the driver: that is why switchboards ask for a working phone number.
Is a booked taxi more expensive than one at a rank?
No. Booking does not change the tariff, with an app or with a cooperative. The only difference is the call-out, capped at €5 on the meter when you get in.
