Fiumicino airport taxi: what it really costs and where to find one
From Leonardo da Vinci airport to central Rome the taxi fare is fixed by the city council: €55 per car, luggage included, day or night. Here are all the flat fares, where the ranks are at arrivals, how to tell a licensed taxi from a tout, and when the train makes more sense.

Flat fares include every extra — luggage, call-out, night rate — apart from the fifth passenger, and they include tolls. They apply to the direct route, with no stops or detours. For destinations without a flat fare the meter is used, with two limits: a ride from Fiumicino cannot cost less than €35 and, if either end is inside the ring road, it cannot exceed €80.

What "inside the Aurelian Walls" means
The Aurelian Walls enclose the historic centre. Inside: Termini, via Nazionale, piazza Venezia, the Pantheon, piazza Navona, Campo de' Fiori, piazza di Spagna, via Veneto, the Colosseum, Celio, the Aventine, Testaccio, Esquilino, part of San Lorenzo, Trastevere and the Janiculum. Outside, so on the meter: Prati and the Vatican area (the Vatican Museums included), Parioli, Flaminio, Nomentano, Salario, San Giovanni beyond the gate, southern Ostiense, Garbatella and EUR. For Prati and St Peter's the metered fare with normal traffic still lands near €55 to €65, and the €80 cap applies if the other end is inside the ring road. If in doubt, ask before getting in — "is this inside the walls?" — or check the address below. The quote from your location does the same thing for any route.
Where to find the taxi rank at Fiumicino
On the arrivals level of Terminals 1 and 3, following the "Taxi" signs. Two kinds of car queue there, and both are legitimate: those licensed by the city of Rome, which charge the flat fares above, and those licensed by the municipality of Fiumicino (Fiumicino crest on the doors), parked on the main road in front of the terminals and outside the railway station, which charge their own town's schedule — for central Rome, ask the price before getting in. You take the first car in the queue; at busy times marshals in high-vis vests direct the line.
How to recognise a licensed taxi and avoid touts
- A white car, TAXI on the roof, the licence number on the doors, at the back and inside, the city crest on the front doors, and the meter in plain sight.
- Drivers wait in the queue at the rank: anyone who approaches you inside the terminal with "taxi? taxi?" is not a taxi driver. Touts ask for €80 to €120 and carry no passenger insurance; checks at Fiumicino in 2026 led to fines and seizures, but they are still around.
- Before setting off, say the destination and confirm "flat fare, €55". There is nothing to haggle over: the price is set by the city council.
- Pay by card if you prefer — the driver has to accept it — and ask for the receipt, which carries the licence number. If something is wrong, report it to the city council.
How long it takes
Fiumicino to the centre takes 40 to 50 minutes in normal conditions, according to Roma Servizi per la Mobilità; at rush hour on the ring road or the Rome-Fiumicino motorway it can take an hour. The price does not move with the clock: that is the point of a flat fare.
Going back: from the centre to Fiumicino
The same flat fare of €55 applies if the taxi picks you up inside the Aurelian Walls; from Tiburtina it is €60, from Ostiense €50. From an address outside the walls the meter applies, with the €80 cap if you start from inside the ring road. Book the evening before with a cooperative (06 3570, 06 6645, 06 5551): on flat-fare routes starting in Rome the driver waits up to 10 minutes from the time given, after which the meter takes over. The price stays €55 through Free Now or Uber Taxi as well — apps cannot charge a different fare.
